2018 Call for Award Nominations

Each year at is Annual Conference, the Association for Asian American Studies and the AURA-AAAS Endowment Fund recognize scholars and community activists for their achievements in the following categories:

  • AAAS Lifetime Achievement Award Nomination
    • The Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS) invites nominations for the Lifetime Achievement Award to honor an individual who has made an outstanding and lifelong contribution to the advancement of the field of Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies.
  • AAAS Excellence in Mentorship Award Nomination
    • The Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS) Excellence in Mentorship Award recognizes an AAAS member who has demonstrated outstanding mentorship of undergraduates, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and/or colleagues.The awardee will receive $300 from the AURA-AAAS Endowment Fund. This gift honors the legacy of the Asians United to Raise Awareness (AURA) Fund and its founding mission: striving for positive social change by funding and developing programs that raise political and cultural awareness about and among the AAPI community.

      After the selection has been made for this award, the AAAS Board will conduct a membership donation drive in honor of the awardee, who will be invited to designate the uses of those funds within the Association.

  • AAAS Early Career Achievement Award Nomination
    • The Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS) Early Career Achievement Award recognizes a junior scholar who has made valuable contributions to the field in the early stage of their career (PhD awarded 2011 or later). Nominees should show outstanding and innovative research in Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies. Preference will be given to those who also exemplify excellence in teaching and demonstrate a commitment to campus, community, and/or professional service. Selection for this award is based on those who are most likely to become academic leaders in the future.The awardee will receive $300 from the AURA-AAAS Endowment Fund. This gift honors the legacy of the Asians United to Raise Awareness (AURA) Fund and its founding mission: striving for positive social change by funding and developing programs that raise political and cultural awareness about and among the Asian American community.
  • AAAS Best Graduate Student Paper Nomination
    • The Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS) will award a prize to the best graduate student paper accepted for presentation at the 2018 AAAS conference, addressing any topic in Asian American or Pacific Islander American studies.The awardee will receive $300 from the AURA-AAAS Endowment Fund. This gift honors the legacy of the Asians United to Raise Awareness (AURA) Fund and its founding mission: striving for positive social change by funding and developing programs that raise political and cultural awareness about and among the Asian American community. Awardee must attend and present the selected paper at the 2018 AAAS conference to receive this prize.
  • AAAS Graduate Student Travel Grant Application
    • The Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS) will award a travel grant to a maximum of two graduate students to attend the 2018 AAAS Conference (March 29-31, San Francisco, CA).Decisions regarding the award will be determined by a subcommittee of the AAAS Board with approval by the full AAAS Board. The subcommittee will consider merit and financial need. Recipient(s) win the cost of the room at the conference hotel site from Wednesday-Sunday, and a reimbursement of his/her paid registration, with the total cost not exceeding $850. The subcommittee will determine on a yearly basis whether to allocate 2 awards at $425 each or one award at $850.
  • AURA-AAAS Endowment Fund Registration Award Application
    • The AURA AAAS Conference Registration Award will fund a maximum of 20 individuals’ registration fees to support attendance at the 2018 AAAS conference.Awardees’ registration fees will be reimbursed from the AURA-AAAS Endowment Fund. This gift honors the legacy of the Asians United to Raise Awareness (AURA) Fund and its founding mission: striving for positive social change by funding and developing programs that raise political and cultural awareness about and among the Asian American community.

      To be considered, applicants must meet the following requirements:

      • Be a paid staff member of a NGO or community organization; an artist, writer, journalist, or filmmaker not employed in a full-time capacity by an educational institution; contingent/adjunct faculty; unemployed; or an undergraduate student
      • Have been accepted by conference organizers as a presenter or a participant in another official capacity at a 2017 AAAS conference event
      • Not have received an AURA AAAS conference registration award in the past three years.

DEADLINE FOR ALL AWARDS: DECEMBER 15, 2017. Honoree will be notified by January 15, 2018. Awards will be presented at the AAAS Annual Conference in San Francisco, California on Friday, March 30, 2018.
