news Inquiry: Research on multiethnic civil society and politics

Filed under: inquiries by aaas | 6:43 pm | Comments (0)

Colleagues:

I am looking for interested scholars and students, especially in but not limited to LA/Orange County, to discuss and perhaps coauthor new research on immigrant assimilation and multiethnic civil society. A key question is how educated, upwardly mobile Koreans and other Asian-Americans relate to other social groups, such as whites in Spokane or Hispanics in Orange County. I survey a wide variety of organizations, e.g. after-school academy (TaekwonDo), Amway-style selling organizations, martial arts, Buddhist (Soka Gakkai) and evangelical mega-churches; and political movements, such as the campaigns for/against Prop 227 and Prop 8. I am also interested in (non-paid) guest scholar positions at Southern Cal colleges or universities to discuss and develop my research in an institutional setting. I posted my research on: https://sites.google.com/site/josephyiphd/Home.

I have limited library and research resources at my home institution. If you could email me recent/relevant research, I appreciate reading them. Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you!

news APA Collections survey

Filed under: inquiries by aaas | 4:36 pm | Comments (0)

The Asian Pacific American holdings in the Library of Congress is completing its first year as a formal collection. While these monographs, serials and other ephemera are scattered in some 20 divisions of the Library, as the librarian at the Asian Division, I am charged with the development and management of primary materials pertaining to Asians and Pacific Islanders in America.

I hope you will share your experience in the archival management and development of your APA collections. Your participation in the survey
below would give me a perspective on how APA collections have proved beneficial to users and whether networking with fellow archivists has
expanded your knowledge about other collections, thus enabling you to share such new information with your peers. The survey will take only
five minutes. Please click on the following link:

news inquiry: Transcontinental Railroad - Chinese workforce

Filed under: inquiries by aaas | 3:45 pm | Comments (0)

Hello.

My name is Rich Ostella and I am hoping that you can assist my studies.

I am currently researching a wealth of information about the Chinese American involvement building the Transcontinental Railroad. However, it appears that the majority of this information has either a Caucasian bias or simply no notable Chinese individuals with interesting stories from this era. I find this last observation very hard to believe. Surely someone has record of letters, personal memoirs, and diaries from this time period?

Simply put, can you (or perhaps someone you know) recommend some reading and/or resources that discuss some very specific Chinese-American families or any of their individual experiences during this tumultuous period of American history?

Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.
