Sidwell Friends, a coeducational Quaker day school with campuses in Washington, DC, and Bethesda, MD, seeks a full-time teacher to start in the 2024-2025 school year in the Upper School English Department as the Endowed Faculty Chair for Asian American Studies.

The Asian American Studies Faculty Chair will have the following responsibilities:

  • Teach courses in Asian American literature and other courses in the English curriculum, with the possibility of teaching additional courses in Asian American histories and cultures appropriate to the candidate’s area of expertise.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty and staff seeking to develop academic courses and enrichment programs, including minimester and summer programs, relating to the study of Asian American histories, literatures, and cultures.
  • Sit as a member on the All-School Equity, Justice, and Community team.
  • Consult with the Director of Equity, Justice, and Community and the Divisional Principals to create appropriate programming across the divisions for the observance of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and other relevant celebrations and observations.
  • Advise, as appropriate, student affinity groups.

Applicants must possess a graduate degree in English literature or Asian American Studies or a related field with an emphasis on literature, and teaching experience preferably at the high school level. In addition to expertise in Asian American Studies, candidates should be comfortable teaching a diverse array of American, Anglophone, and global literature. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an ability to inspire and support students and will show a willingness to work collaboratively and independently in an environment committed to academic excellence, equity, justice, service, and students’ social emotional wellness. An appreciation for adolescents and a sense of humor are also essential.
