Assistant Professor in Theatre, Davidson College

The Davidson College Department of Theatre invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor starting Fall 2023.  We seek an artist-scholar with expertise in the performance traditions and practice of the global majority, such as Black American Theater, Latinx Theatre, Asian American Theatre, Native American Drama, and/or other artistic traditions outside of the Western canon. The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity for excellence in artistic, scholarly, and pedagogical practice in a liberal arts context.

The successful candidate will be able to expand the scope of our production season by staging work by playwrights from groups that have been historically under-represented in American theatre, or through innovative approaches to the creation of new theatrical work about the histories and stories of marginalized communities. We are especially committed to deepening our capacity to stage work by Afrodiasporic, Latinx, Asian American, and Asian theatre artists. The individual would teach beginning acting as well as courses that expand our curriculum; specifically, the successful candidate will  develop courses which center the performance traditions and practices of the global majority. Candidates who can teach courses that could  be cross-listed with other departments or interdisciplinary programs (e.g., Africana Studies, Arab Studies, East Asian Studies, Environmental Studies,  and Latin American Studies) are desirable. The hire will be committed to teaching theatre within a liberal arts context, practicing inclusive pedagogy, mentoring students of diverse backgrounds and identities, and working interdisciplinarily to build community.
