The Division of Ethnic Studies is the only degree and tenure-granting Ethnic Studies division in the intermountain west, giving us a newly gained national prominence across the country. The division is home to eighteen faculty. The division offers courses and scholarly expertise across the traditional Ethnic Studies ethnic and racial groups (American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, Black Studies, Latinx Studies, and Pacific Island Studies). We also hold strengths in research and teaching with regards to Feminist Studies and Diaspora & Migration Studies, and the Division has taken concerted efforts to expand into a global consideration of race and ethnicity. Many of our faculty hold joint or shared appointments across campus and we are thoroughly interdisciplinary in our approaches, with faculty in the humanities, social sciences, and education. Ethnic studies faculty are award-winning scholars and teachers.

The primary responsibilities for the chair:

  • Supervise Divisional Faculty in compliance with University policies with regard to RPT processes and Faculty responsibilities
  • Supervise the Divisional Budget and the allocation of Divisional resources in alignment with School and University directives
  • Oversee the Division’s curriculum and semester schedule
  • Facilitate the Division’s strategic goals in faculty development, curricular/student growth, and in enhancing research and teaching excellence of the Division
  • Supervise Faculty Hiring processes in compliance with the University policies and procedures
  • Organize and maintain a regular schedule of Division Faculty Meetings and comply with Faculty Governance policies
  • Inform Faculty of important developments across campus
  • Oversee Divisional reviews and Learning Outcomes Assessment
  • Assign Service responsibilities for Divisional Faculty
  • Represent the Division in inter-departmental affairs and campus or system-wide committees
  • Provide Annual Salary Letters to Division Personnel with accurate salary increases
  • Assist in funding growth for the Division
  • Oversee student evaluation procedures and grievance issues within the Division
