AAAS Response to the Atlanta Murders March 1, 2021 We are enraged and heartbroken over the murders of 8 people in Atlanta, including 6 Asian/Asian American women: Xiaojie Tan, Daoyou Feng, Delaina Ashley Yaun, Paul Andre Michels, Soon Chung Park, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, and Yong Yue. These murders follow a long history of racist, misogynist violence against Asian women, a history with which we are both professionally and personally familiar. As an academic organization dedicated to scholarship, art, and activism centering the lives of Asian Americans, we stand in solidarity and shared mourning with those rendered so vulnerable to structural and interpersonal violence. Asian American organizations, academic units, and individual writers, scholars, and activists nationwide have released statements providing the vital historical and political contexts for understanding the tragedy in Atlanta, as well as expressing our collective grief and rage. Rather than duplicating this work, we gather its collective knowledge and feeling here.
