AAAS Response to the Atlanta Murders March 1, 2021 We are enraged and heartbroken over the murders of 8 people in Atlanta, including 6 Asian/Asian American women: Xiaojie Tan, Daoyou Feng, Delaina Ashley Yaun, Paul Andre Michels, Soon Chung Park, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, and Yong Yue. These murders follow a long history of racist, misogynist violence against Asian women, a history with which we are both professionally and personally familiar. As an academic organization dedicated to scholarship, art, and activism centering the lives of Asian Americans, we stand in solidarity and shared mourning with those rendered so vulnerable to structural and interpersonal violence. Asian American organizations, academic units, and individual writers, scholars, and activists nationwide have released statements providing the vital historical and political contexts for understanding the tragedy in Atlanta, as well as expressing our collective grief and rage. Rather than duplicating this work, we gather its collective knowledge and feeling here. We also pledge to continue the crucial scholarly work to understand, and someday end, the conditions that make these murders continually possible. –The Board of the Association for Asian American Studies Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC), Atlanta: A Community-Centered Response to Violence Against Asian American Communities Statement by Red Canary Song CAAAV Condemns Atlanta Shootings and Anti-Asian Violence University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign Asian American Studies and Gender and Women’s Studies Joint Statement on Anti-Asian Violence Statement by Circle for Asian American Literary Studies Regarding Atlanta Shootings Statement by the Association for Asian Studies Chinatown Community for Equitable Development SFSU Message from the AAS Department on Anti-Asian Violence UCLA Joint Statement on Anti-Asian Violence UCSD AAPI Studies Statement on Anti-Asian Violence and Supporting Our Communities Northwestern University Asian American Studies Statement on Atlanta Mass Murder Barnard Center for Research on Women Statement on Defending Asian Women Defending Sex Workers University of Colorado Boulder Ethnic Studies/Women and Gender Studies Joint Statement National Conference of Black Political Scientists Statement National Women’s Studies Association Condemns anti-Asian Violence and Racism SWE Condemns Violence Against the AAPI Community ASU School of Transborder Studies Statement Statement from the APAS at ASU St. Olaf College Race and Ethnic Studies Joint Statement
